When Naomh Éanna lifted the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship in 2023, it was the second time in six seasons that the Gorey club had been crowned county champions. The first, in 2018, could be filed away as a breakthrough. The second answered the only question left: whether a club that had spent most of its life in the intermediate grade could live at the top of Wexford hurling for good.
The scale of the achievement is best measured against the club's own timeline. Naomh Éanna were an intermediate club as recently as 2015. Within three years of promotion they were senior champions, and within eight they had two titles in the cabinet — a rise as fast as any in modern Wexford hurling.
That kind of progress is not built in a single season. It comes from a juvenile section that has fed the senior panel a steady supply of hurlers, from coaching structures at Páirc Uí Shíocháin that keep players in the game through the difficult teenage years, and from a group that lost county finals at under-14, under-16, minor and under-21 level before learning how to win the ones that matter.
For a club founded in 1970, the 2023 title is the clearest statement yet of what has been built on the Clonattin Road: a senior hurling club with a genuine claim to be counted among the best in Wexford, and one that still draws every player it fields from the parish of Gorey and its schools.
